WOMEN IN THE ARTS: Megan Mulrooney, a rising voice of the LA art scene
Women in the art world are inspiring, driven and hardworking leaders. Megan, an Angeleno and former director at Nino Mier gallery, is the perfect example of an ongoing success story at the top of the art world. Hired as a senior director in 2018 by Nino Mier, she left the gallery in May 2024 at a time when a controversial story subsequently led to the closing of the gallery’s multiple LA locations. Finding the opportunity to take over those same spaces she once worked at, Megan took over the three spaces on Santa Monica boulevard to open her eponymous gallery, Megan Mulrooney. -

Marin Majić's Hazy, Dark Portals Inhabit Megan Mulrooney's New LA Space
Marin Majić’s mixed media canvases emit and absorb light at once. These hazy, dark portals shimmer with sentimentality, yet glower with ennui. Water rushes through surreal scenes in the Frankfurt-born Croatian artist’s latest works, and celestial light emanates from parties. Majić’s meticulously refined method alternatively obscures and reveals, mirroring the dualities he’s dealing with. Like, how is the world in such turmoil while he’s celebrating the birth of a child? Maybe you’ve seen that Tumblr post with the teenage girl’s diary entry from July 20, 1969: “Got rhyme put in my handbag from someone who’s apparently got a crush on me. It’s Nicholas I think. UGH. Man landed on the moon.” Despite world history, all of our everyday lives roll on.

Marin Majic and the "Dawning" of New Day
There was a moment there a few years back when realism was at a height, artists digging deep and finding the human form and the body needed to be as distinguished and clear as possible. Recently, someone asked me what I thought of painting post-pandemic, and I said "hazy, as if we are desperate to capture a memory." And I used Marin Majić's work as an example. Dawning, on view at Megan Mulrooney's new space in place of Nino Mier's quick exit from LA, is an immersive show, full of beautifully rendered, interstellar-themed, works of dreams and the cosmos and very much in the mood of a hazy memory of a time that may have happened. Dawn evokes a new beginning, something new on the horizon, a new day. And here, I get the sense of remaking what was to what could be, and that Marin made this at the time of the birth of his second child seems so vital to what the viewer sees. Life as a blur, but very real and a chance to begin again.
